Voter ID Requirements

The North Carolina legislature has worked hard to assure election integrity by making sure only qualified voters can vote and minimizing barriers to voting. To vote in North Carolina, you must show an acceptable photo ID that is unexpired or expired for one year or less. These include:

  • North Carolina Driver’s License,

  • North Carolina State ID,

  • Student ID approved by the State Board of Elections,

  • U.S. passport

You may also show certain IDs without regard to expiration date, such as a military or veterans photo ID issued by the U.S. government.

If you cannot show photo ID when voting in person, you can still cast a provisional ballot by filling out an ID Exception Form.
